  29. Release Notes:
  30. Shot over four years, the comedy omnibus Movie 43 boasts
  31. an insane amount of noteworthy stars from Kate Winslet,
  32. Hugh Jackman, Naomi Watts, Emma Stone, Chloe Grace Moretz,
  33. Gerard Butler, Halle Berry, Terrence Howard, and Stephen
  34. Merchant. With so much top-rate talent, you might think
  35. this comedy is destined to be a classic. However, there
  36. are some worrisome signs.
  37. For one, it's been scheduled for the theatrical release
  38. dumping zone that is January. Secondly, the movie doesn't
  39. appear to be screening for critics at all. Third, none of
  40. stars are promoting the film in any way shape or form.
  41. And lastly, its producer Peter Farrelly has revealed that
  42. the cast signed on not so much because of a great script
  43. but because Farrelly and his fellow producers were dogged
  44. in their pursuit of them.
  45. The NY Post reports Movie 43 has long been a passion
  46. project of Farrelly's and his producing partner Charlie
  47. Wessler, who dreamed of making a comedy in the vein of
  48. Kentucky Fried Movie. This was not a project that appealed
  49. to most studios, but Wessler got the ball rolling by
  50. convincing Jackman to sign on after the two met at a
  51. wedding. From there they somehow snagged Winslet, and then
  52. used their names to lure in more luminaries. Still, the
  53. pair faced flat-out rejection from some stars, like George
  54. Clooney. When asked if he'd like to cameo as himself in a
  55. sketch where he'd fail to pick up women, Clooney's response
  56. was a curt: "No fucking way."
  57. Other big names that dropped out of the project include
  58. South Park's Trey Parker and Matt Stone as well as Kentucky
  59. Fried Movie scribes David and Jerry Zucker, and Colin Farrell,
  60. who was slated to appear opposite Butler in a
  61. leprechaun-centered short. Butler has commented that Farrell
  62. offered a lame excuse about stepping out, adding, "Colin, you
  63. saw sense and backed out - admit it."
  64. Less fortunate it seems was Richard Gere, who as a friend of
  65. Wessler's initially agreed to play a part in the film, but
  66. then attempted to dodge it for more than a year. For most
  67. productions this would be enough to get an actor out. But
  68. with Movie 43's long list of directors and thereby limber
  69. shooting schedule, this tactic didn't work. Finally, Gere
  70. agreed to play a dopey computer designer who doesn't
  71. understand why young boys are humping his iBabe creation on
  72. two conditions: it had to be shot in four days, and in
  73. Los Angeles, not New York. Regrettably for Gere, these
  74. conditions were met easily enough.
  75. Even Farrelly admits of his stars, "They clearly wanted out!
  76. But we wouldn't let them." He goes on to say this project was
  77. made under a simple strategy: "Wait for them. Shoot when they
  78. want to shoot. Guilt them to death."
