Subject 19's parents were security troops. The father died fighting human vermin seeking entry in the underground tunnel. The mother was exiled for embezzlement. The orphan was adopted into the current Director's pet project: manipulating psychology and physiology to create ideal soldiers. The Director is, to put it lightly, interested in defense.

Rigorous training, experimental indoctrination and "social programming" and propaganda techniques, psychological hardening techniques (ie. torture), and innovative chemical treatments resulted in many deaths and suicides. With #19, they bore more valuable fruit.

Inducted into the highly regarded Expeditionary Corps as recruit Gandicze, Subject 19 showed significant promise as a fighter, but seemed stunted socially (almost unnoticed) and in regards to interest in other practical skills (well noted upon in reports). Practically doted upon as the first success of the project, and well regarded professionally upon demonstrating ability to work security and hunt-and-destroy missions, promotions were inevitable.

Current assignment is locating the AWOL agent Dardiolai, who has gone silent and has not reported in [TIME] on his mission in Dace. If he is in difficulty due to enemy action, neutralize the enemy. If he has deserted his post, recover his research. Traitors must die.

Gandicze enjoys the sensation of splitting wood, and observing the splinters and breaks that form when wood is split. As a dabbling woodworker Gandicze makes knicknacks when the mood strikes, but will sometimes spend hours simply chopping wood into scraps.

The interested parties in Glad X adopted dog breeding from the surrounding humans. The original stock breed was a fairly tame sheep dog. The glade breeders, spurred by repeated census-surveys that indicated increasing levels of anxiety and stress among, bred that stock into a breed intended for companionship with the burdinadin: fluffy to be pleasing to the senses, loyal so as to bond, and intelligent enough that the din dealing with the dog did not grow frustrated with it.

In the centuries since, more specialized service breeds have been groomed from that companion variety to make good use of its intelligence and obedience. The program was so successful, that it is now standard practice in the glade that any din may petition to have a dog assigned to them and be subsidized by the state.

BONUS LORE

Dardiolai has abandoned his mission directive for Glade X: observing Dacian military strengths and determining how salvagable Taphonomy Bay is. Instead, he has discovered a deep hatred of his home he didnt realize he was suppressing. In observing the brutal republic the Dacians have made, he has found his own ideas of strength through adversity, and is intrigued by their democratic and violent political processes.

Finding strange solace and refuge in the wastelands of Dace where a robust Burdinadin might wander unprotected, he has begun seeking his own self improvement, and preaches to stray Burds that he comes across -not from his home glade- a philosophy of deconstructive introspection and self realization. A small camp of exiles and survivors have grown around him, subsisting off Dacian markets by selling violence or metalwork.

The most radical and dangerous of his ideas is the one might, by using Natural Philosophy on ones self, first the body, then - theoretically - the mind, one will be able understand their own faults and improve them. He also postulates that That Which Stares Back is an artifact of the Burdinadin's internal fundamental faults of the mind/soul, and that if perfection (enlightenment) is reached, that That Which Stares Back will be defeated.

Somewhere in the back of his mind, Dardiolai mulls on the idea of him and an army of other green-eyed elves marching back into his home, and liberating it- so that his philosophy may uplift them all.
