  15. - Release Notes ------------------------------------------------------------- -
  16.
  17.    Death Cab For Cutie are back with a new five track EP called The Open Door,
  18.    which explores the undiscovered territory of their last release, Narrow
  19.    Stairs. Billed as the songs that didnÆt quite fit the mood of Narrow Stairs,
  20.    this EP sounds different enough to not only provide the ôsuperö fans with
  21.    something to tide them over until the next ôproperö release but also acts as
  22.    a pretty good standalone EP for newbies, or for the people that didnÆt like
  23.    Narrow Stairs.
  24.
  25.    Generally speaking albums/EPÆs that are made up of discarded session material
  26.    come across as being pointless. If the band werenÆt happy enough to put it on
  27.    the album in the first place then why should I be bothered about buying it?
  28.    There are exceptions to this rule, just listen to The Avalanche by Sufjan
  29.    Stevens (excluding the 100 versions of æChicagoÆ) for proof of that. So when
  30.    I heard that Death Cab would be giving it a go I was a bit skeptical.
  31.    Thankfully my skepticism was unfounded.
  32.
  33.    The EP works on two levels really. Firstly the songs are good and secondly
  34.    they donÆt sound like they could have fit anywhere on Narrow Stairs, which I
  35.    guess is the reason why the band decided to release this EP in the first
  36.    place. Musically speaking the songs are more strum based than their Narrow
  37.    Stairs siblings, with the only hint of classic Gibbard riffery coming in the
  38.    form of EP highlight æMy Mirror SpeaksÆ. The biggest similarity between this
  39.    EP and Narrow Stairs, or any DCFC album really, is Gibbards ability to create
  40.    meaningful lyrics without losing his pop sensibility, which isnÆt easy to do.
  41.
  42.    So there we have it, another DCFC release and yet another reason to smile.
