  13. - Release Notes ------------------------------------------------------------- -
  14. The last time Biffy Clyro released an LP û 2009Æs Only Revolutions û it
  15. expanded their glowing track record of top 40 appearances. With the singles
  16. chart now a Rihanna-centric guitar wasteland, the onus is on the album format
  17. to prop up a rock act. So Biffy Clyro are taking the idea and running û nay,
  18. sprinting û with it, making sixth studio album Opposites an
  19. attention-commanding two-disc behemoth.
  20. The division between the two halves isn't as apparent as one might anticipate
  21. from a project such as this (with a title such as that). Thematically, each
  22. disc does adhere to its subjects û the former an anxious, bleak chapter, told
  23. with a raw intensity; the latter playing host to a more positive, uplifting
  24. premise.
  25. But sonically, Opposites is very much a single body of work. The Sand at the
  26. Core of Our Bones (CD one) segues seamlessly into The Land at the End of Our
  27. Toes (CD two), making for an overall steadfast record thatÆs unmistakeably
  28. theirs.
  29. There's ample opportunity for experimentation, it's just not executed in the
  30. most obvious way û rather than two separate threads going in two disparate
  31. directions, the evolution is diffused across the entire double album, lifting
  32. the project as a whole. Opposites, in perhaps the least expected of ways, is
  33. next-level Biffy.
  34. In amongst the seismic riffs and knockout choruses that the band has made its
  35. calling card are twinkling vocal hooks, bagpipes, little punctuations of harp,
  36. yowling bass, and overt humour. Many of the above can be found in Stingin'
  37. Belle alone, which houses the lyric ôyou think you're cool like a porcupineö.
  38. For a band with the tools to be a staid, ever-earnest entity, a pleasing sense
  39. of wit continues to be a key facet of Biffy Clyro (even if any fool knows the
  40. humble hedgehog is where it's at).
  41. Opposites depicts a band equipped for whatever curveballs the industry may
  42. throw, and not at the expense of their veracity. It may not fulfil the
  43. presumed promise of a huge epic double album, but it doesn't want to. It's a
  44. solid, engaging and high-calibre Biffy Clyro album. And that's no bad thing.
