  102.                 ██▓   Because of û or perhaps in spite of û the fact that  ▓██
  103.                 ██▓   my musical tastes fall well outside of the           ▓██
  104.                 ██▓   mainstream, I have always been suspicious of         ▓██
  105.                 ██▓   something that has become the ælatest critical       ▓██
  106.                 ██▓   darlingÆ, even when it is from an artist I love. In  ▓██
  107.                 ██▓   recent years I remember buying æRiver: The Joni      ▓██
  108.                 ██▓   LettersÆ on release because of the artist making     ▓██
  109.                 ██▓   the recording (Herbie Hancock), his guests (Wayne    ▓██
  110.                 ██▓   Shorter, Michael Brecker, Roy Hargrove and           ▓██
  111.                 ██▓   vocalists Norah Jones, Tina Turner), and of course   ▓██
  112.                 ██▓   the subject of the tribute (Joni Mitchell). I        ▓██
  113.                 ██▓   played it a few times, since nothing really ÆstuckÆ  ▓██
  114.                 ██▓   the first time, but quickly deleted the content off  ▓██
  115.                 ██▓   my iPod as I found it indulgent and inferior to the  ▓██
  116.                 ██▓   originals in every way. But soon enough the tribute  ▓██
  117.                 ██▓   album was a top seller and was nominated for and     ▓██
  118.                 ██▓   eventually won big-time at the Grammy Awards. None   ▓██
  119.                 ██▓   of the reasons that the record was celebrated had    ▓██
  120.                 ██▓   much to do with actually being a great collection    ▓██
  121.                 ██▓   of music. So when the newest recording by the        ▓██
  122.                 ██▓   talented but relatively unknown pianist Vijay Iyer   ▓██
  123.                 ██▓   was being called æjazz record of the yearÆ û even    ▓██
  124.                 ██▓   before release û I was quite skeptical to say the    ▓██
  125.                 ██▓   least.                                               ▓██
  126.                 ██▓                                                        ▓██
  127.                 ██▓   Vijay Iyer isnÆt exactly new on the scene, as the    ▓██
  128.                 ██▓   38 year old child of Indian parents has been         ▓██
  129.                 ██▓   recording for nearly 15 years. He has had success    ▓██
  130.                 ██▓   with Steve ColemanÆs Five Elements and other         ▓██
  131.                 ██▓   ensembles as well as with his own recordings, which  ▓██
  132.                 ██▓   have featured a variety of configurations and also   ▓██
  133.                 ██▓   different degrees of technology infused with his     ▓██
  134.                 ██▓   interesting blend of jazz and southeast Asian        ▓██
  135.                 ██▓   influences. For Historicity he has a basic piano     ▓██
  136.                 ██▓   trio with Stephen Crump on bass and Marcus Gilmore   ▓██
  137.                 ██▓   on drums, but that doesnÆt make this music ordinary  ▓██
  138.                 ██▓   or derivative by any stretch of the imagination.     ▓██

  140.                 ██▓   2009 has been an interesting year for piano trios,   ▓██
  141.                 ██▓   even more for me as I have been rediscovering some   ▓██
  142.                 ██▓   classic piano trio works that had long sat locked    ▓██
  143.                 ██▓   on LPÆs in my closet. While there have certainly     ▓██
  144.                 ██▓   been mainstream releases like Keith JarretÆs latest  ▓██
  145.                 ██▓   group of expertly executed standards, I have been    ▓██
  146.                 ██▓   more in tune with the newer directions in trio       ▓██
  147.                 ██▓   interplay exemplified by Avery SharpeÆs new release  ▓██
  148.                 ██▓   ôAutumn Moonlightö. This has also been fed by the    ▓██
  149.                 ██▓   re-release of some classic works by folks like       ▓██
  150.                 ██▓   Richie Beirach and Paul Bley from the ECM library.   ▓██
  151.                 ██▓   I recall reading a comment recently by Avery Sharpe  ▓██
  152.                 ██▓   about how after years playing with McCoy TynerÆs     ▓██
  153.                 ██▓   trio that the space afforded by that group and the   ▓██
  154.                 ██▓   level of interplay and importance of each member     ▓██
  155.                 ██▓   made it so he HAD to form his own trio because he    ▓██
  156.                 ██▓   couldnÆt hear music in any other way.                ▓██

  158.                 ██▓   Likewise Iyer constructs a trio where every not and  ▓██
  159.                 ██▓   rhythmic statement by each member lends              ▓██
  160.                 ██▓   considerable weight to every moment of music         ▓██
  161.                 ██▓   presented. But the structure and presentation are    ▓██
  162.                 ██▓   very different: whereas SharpeÆs group will easily   ▓██
  163.                 ██▓   slide into the background to allow for               ▓██
  164.                 ██▓   conversations and has been pleasantly enjoyed by my  ▓██
  165.                 ██▓   family on a Sunday morning, Historicity simply will  ▓██
  166.                 ██▓   not be ignored. My family enjoys it, but it just     ▓██
  167.                 ██▓   isnÆt the sort of music that allows for easy         ▓██
  168.                 ██▓   background listening during casual conversation.     ▓██
  169.                 ██▓   The music here is dense and layered and punctuated   ▓██
  170.                 ██▓   both rhythmically and harmonically with surprises    ▓██
  171.                 ██▓   at every turn.                                       ▓██
